Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression which is affected by seasonal changes. It normally happens at the same time of the year and can continue throughout the winter months.

Symptoms include low energy, sleep disturbance, appetite issues, hopelessness, sadness, isolation and loneliness.

 To help with SAD:

  • Open the curtains and blinds and sit near windows with bright sunlight at your home and office.
  • Go for walks in the open air and where there is sunlight.
  • Light therapy may help as it produces a very bright light for 30-45 minutes per day. This is best used in the mornings and can improve mood throughout the winter.
  • Talking therapy can help you identify negative thought patterns and behaviours that may increase avoidance behaviour.
  • Build in physical activities which will help your brain produce endorphins, which will improve your mood and relieve stress and anxiety.
  • Sleep – begin a routine for going to bed and awakening in the morning. Try to not oversleep or nap during the day.
  • Medication if symptoms of SAD become severe, it is important that you contact your GP.
